Not ready or don’t want to quit smoking?
Well, let’s talk about vaping then.
A vape is a battery-powered device that heats a liquid called e-juice or e-liquid. Once the liquid is heated, it produces a vapour that is inhaled from the devices that are often referred to as e-cigarettes, vapes, mods, tank systems or e-hookahs.
Did you know that…
Vaping is legal
Vaping is a lot less harmful than smoking
Health Canada says that replacing cigarette smoking entirely with a vaping product will significantly reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals.
I don’t smoke, is it ok for me to start vaping?
The Lung Association and Health Canada do not recommend vaping if you’re a non-smoker. Vaping can increase your exposure to some harmful substances that could negatively affect your health. Because vaping hasn’t been around for a very long time, there aren’t many long-term studies on what the effects of vaping for a long time can do to your lungs or other parts of your body. Researchers are still evaluating the outcomes. We do know for certain that vape liquid or e-juice often contains nicotine and although nicotine is not known to cause cancer, it is highly addictive and can alter brain development in youth and adolescents.
I want to quit smoking, but the usual proven methods (patch, gum, lozenge, CHAMPIX®, Zyban® or counselling) just aren't working, can I try to quit on my own using a vape?
The evidence is still emerging about whether vaping is an effective method for quitting smoking, but some evidence suggests that vaping is linked to improved rates of success when trying to quit smoking.
If you want to quit by using a vape then go ahead and try it. Every attempt to quit smoking is one step closer to becoming a non-smoker, and this might be the thing that works for you.
Where do I buy a vape, anyway?
It's important to get your vaping device and e-juice from a reputable dealer that meets Health Canada vape product regulation standards. A reputable dealer will be able to guide you in choosing the products that will be most suitable for your needs and show you how to use the device safely.
What about second-hand vape clouds, are they as bad as second-hand smoke?
The health effects of non-vape users from second-hand vapour or clouds are still not fully known. However, given the low levels of chemicals in vapour compared to tobacco smoke, risks are expected to be much smaller. If you vape it is still important to respect other people’s right to breathe clean air and in many provinces, you aren’t permitted to vape in places where smoking is prohibited.
What about vape safety, are there any precautions I need to know about?
*It is extremely important to keep all vaping liquid or e-juice out of the reach of children and pets like you would with any dangerous medication. Some liquids contain enough nicotine to seriously harm a child or pet and nicotine can be absorbed through the skin, by mouth or inhaling.*
If you suspect a child or pet has been exposed to e-liquid or e-juice, please contact the Manitoba Poison Centre at 1-855-776-4766 or 1-855-7POISON
Visit your nearest emergency department or contact 911 if you feel it is a life threatening emergency.
Vape devices and batteries should be stored and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Charging devices with internal batteries using a rapid phone charger can compromise the device. Storing batteries improperly or using damaged batteries can cause injuries.
Never operate any vaping device if you are not familiar with its safety instructions.
